Lung Diseases Facts

Human lungs are almost as important as the heart in terms of their functions. Whenever you take a breath of air, your heart takes the oxygen supplied by your lungs and sends some eventually to every cell in your body. There are several diseases that can cause death or extreme health damage is not detected early. Most can be detected and predicted if the patient is treated at once and if the doctors are informed about prolonged exposure of the patient to asbestos. There are several asbestos lung diseases that a patient can develop due to his continuous exposure to asbestos. The scary fact is since so many household materials have been built from asbestos, we really cannot tell if we have already been exposed too much.

Individuals that suffer from Alcoholic Lung Disease have been found to experience many chemical based imbalances associated with the oxidative based stress that alcohol places on the body - specifically, the lungs. Asbestos fibers are used in a number of different products from clutch pads to ceiling tiles to fire doors. This is no surprise considering the benefits that come with utilizing this substance. Asbestos is part of the silicate family. Fibers of asbestos get loosened and floats freely in the atmosphere. These fibers will enter the body through inhalation into the lungs. These fibers of asbestos that have entered the lungs will not leave the body and cannot be expelled out.

Restrictive Lung Diseases result into either loss of lung tissue or decrease in the lung's ability to expand. It may also decrease lung's ability to transfer oxygen or carbon dioxide into the bloodstream. The killer disease of lung cancer is a kind of restrictive lung disease. There are two main players in the world of smoking related lung diseases: lung cancer and emphysema. The medical community tells us that 90% of all lung cancers are caused by smoking. Let that set in for a minute - 90% of all lung cancer.  Like many other conditions caused due to exposure to asbestos, this sort of disease has no known cure. Treatment is mainly confined to reducing the symptoms of respiratory problems caused due to the condition. A person with COPD may have either emphysema or bronchitis, but most have both. Some people with COPD may also have symptoms similar to asthma. In chronic bronchitis the damage is in the breathing tubes (bronchial tubes).

Cancer diseases related to asbestos take 2 to 4 decades before they become completely harmful. This latency period is common in asbestos lung diseases. Asbestosis is a form of pneumoconiosis. This is an asbestos lung disease where damage occurs at the interior areas of the lungs. This is also due to the inhalation of the asbestos dusts. However, those that consumed alcohol on a regular basis had a higher chance of death and developing lung disease. In the normal functioning of the body, the air that we inhale reaches the lungs where the foreign substances are filtered by various means such as cell linings in the airways as we as macrophages.
